Investigation
An AES-Marconi Contaminated Land project
follows the subsequent steps:
a) Commencement of Preliminary
Investigation -
Phase I Survey
The Preliminary Investigation consists of a Desktop
Study which may be sufficient itself to determine whether
or not a site is contaminated. It examines the history
of a site, using records such as maps, plans, photographs,
geological and hydrological data to gain information about;
past owners/occupiers, industrial or commercial uses, raw
materials, disposal of waste arisings, site layout (above
and below ground, including the provision of services)
and any mining history.
b) Commencement of Phase II
Survey
Phase II Surveys seek to assess the risks across
any site, using a series of Targeted sampling bore holes
and/or trial pits as well as other data to determine the
nature of soils, groundwater and the link between any contaminants,
pathways and ultimately receptors. Soil samples can then
be taken and analysed to determine the concentrations of
any potential contaminants.
Once any contaminants have been identified,
risks assessed and the objectives of the investigation/end-use
of the site are known, then any remediation strategy can
be tailor made accordingly.

c) Remedial Strategy
Desktop Studies/Completed Reports are promptly
submitted to Clients, the latter containing details on
the extent of contamination present (if any), recommended
remedial works, an outline of the extent of any physical
disturbance to property and a quotation with regards to
undertaking the recommended remedial actions.
d) Remedial Works
Provided that AES-Marconi’s recommendations
and quotation are accepted, a team of specialist engineers
and technicians would manage the operation using a combination
of in-house expertise in both ex-situ and in-situ remediation
techniques and waste management as well as working with
3rd parties if required.
e) Status Updates
During all survey and remedial works owner/occupiers
are kept informed of progress
f) Completion of Works
Upon completion of any remedial works, a site
is re-sampled to ensure efficacy. AES-Marconi will then
supply a ‘Verification report’ of the work
carried out for approval by the appropriate regulatory
bodies. This report demonstrates the initial condition
of the site, the remedial work undertaken an the sampling
results generated post-remediation.
