Asbestos
Risk & Waste Management
A typical AES-Marconi Asbestos Risk & Waste
Management project lifecycle takes the following steps:
a) Commencement of Survey – Types
I, II & III
There are three types of survey which can be applied to asbestos identification
and management; Type I, Type II and Type III, dependent on specific circumstances.
Type I Surveys (inspection base) serve to locate the presence and extent
of any asbestos containing materials (ACM’s) deferring the need
to sample until demolition or refurbishment is to take place. Type II
surveys entail the same degree of inspection as a Type I Survey, but
with the addition of representative sampling of materials to be analysed
for the presence of asbestos. Type III surveys are used to locate all
asbestos containing materials in a building and may involve destructive
inspection to access all areas. A full sampling programme is then employed
to identify and estimate the volumes and surface areas of ACM’s.
Most surveys should involve a preliminary site meeting, desktop study,
sampling strategy and risk assessment of the survey itself. Once any
ACM’s have been identified, type determined, risks assessed then
any remediation strategy can be tailor made accordingly.
b) Asbestos Management/Remedial
Strategy
Desktop Studies/Completed Survey Reports are promptly submitted to clients,
the latter containing details on the extent and nature of Asbestos Containing
Materials present, risk assessments, management plans, any recommended
remedial works required, an outline of the extent of any physical disturbance
to property and a quotation with regards to undertaking the recommended
remedial actions.
c) Remedial Works
Provided that AES-Marconi’s recommendations and quotation are accepted
a team of remedial technicians would manage the operation, using a combination
of in-house expertise in both ex-situ and in-situ remediation techniques
and waste management as well as working with specialist 3rd parties if
required. All work is undertaken in accordance with health& safety
legislation for the management of Asbestos waste including fully isolating
action areas, the use of full personal protective equipment as well as
showering protocols to negate any risks to employees and ensure effective
containment.
d) Status Updates
During all survey development of management plans and/or remedial works,
owner/occupiers are kept informed of progress
e) Completion of Works
Upon completion of any Asbestos management plan remedial works, AES-Marconi
will perform the 4 Stage Clearance Test leading to the issuing of a
legal certificate of reoccupation. AES-Marconi can then provide assistance
in keeping a clients Asbestos register/management plan updated, continually
assessing any potential degradation of ‘safe’ Asbestos
containing materials left in-situ and therefore changes in the level
of risk.
